WORLD WAR ONE AT SEA
A century past, World War I was a shock to Victorian/Edwardian sensibilities,
the beginnings of "total war". There were less slaughter and more strategy at
sea, where the Entente Powers tried to blockade the Central Powers while
fighting off German submarines. Why did the Germans provoke the British into
a warship building race and push the USA into the war through unrestricted
submarine warfare? How were the submarines defeated (sonar, radar, and
aircraft carriers were weapons of the next war)?

GETTING STARTED IN GAME DESIGN
In this course, you'll learn what's involved in game design (video and tabletop)
and start to design/test your own game. This is a combination of practical
design and an overview of how design plays its part in the game industry.
Taught by a multi-times published game designer (now retired) college teacher
and author of a book about game design. No programming or art skills are
required or taught, nor do you need other experience. This is about specifying
and testing how the game actually works.

INTRO TO FANTASY ROLE-PLAYING
A major pop cultural phenomenon of the past 40 years has been the
development of fantasy role-playing games (FRPG), especially tabletop
Dungeons and Dragons. RPG's are uniquely co-operative games, with a
"dungeon-master" controlling the opposition while the players are all part of a
group of adventurers. We'll talk about what RPG's are, how they work, why they
have appealed to multiple generations, features and problems, myths and
realities. Then we'll play an FRPG!

VIKING HISTORY: TABLETOP GAME
Viking history is nearly unique, full of interesting questions and incidents.
Games can help us understand history. You will be able to play the Viking
adventure board game "Sea Kings", published by Worthington Publishing,
designed by your instructor. The instructor also designed Britannia, a game of
1,000 years of British history including the Viking era, selected for the book
"Hobby Games: the 100 Best". We will use it to help
understand the history, but it's too long and complex to play here. edited by James Lowder
